This was a quiet week for bowling, with Club ties taking precedence over external competitions. There was, however, games in the Wemyss & District Leagues, with Kennoway B.C. the opposition on Wednesday in the Seniors’ League. In the home game, S.Ross, D.Whyte, J.Dewar and P.McTavish (skip) got off to the worst possible start, losing the first 5 ends to trail 0-14. They then won 8 of the next 10 ends, but still managed to lose their game 10-17. In the away game, D.Baldie, K.Maskell, B.Marchbank and B.Bell (skip)started well and led 7-2 after 6 ends played, before the gap was closed to 10-8 after 11 ends. However, winning 3 of the last 4 ends secured a 13-9 victory, giving the overall result as a 3-3 draw. This keeps the Seniors in mid-table and only 2 points off 3rd place with 2 games left to play.
On Friday evening, the Division 1 game was at Kirkcaldy West End, who were 4 points ahead of Markinch in the league table and only 2 points off the top of the table, so this was a big game to win. On rink 5, M.Comrie, P.McTavish, Jamie Cameron and D.Comrie (skip) trailed 5-13 after 11 ends played, but they finished strongly and were unfortunate to lose their game 16-17. On rink 3, T.Dewar, M.Dewar, T.Pettigrew and Jim Clark (skip) picked up a count of 5 shots on the 7th end to lead 8-4 and lost only one of the next 5 ends to extend their lead to 14-6 and although they lost the next 4 ends, it was only by single shots. They then picked up another 3 shots on the last end to secure a 17-10 victory. On rink4, B.Drysdale, D.Whyte, S.McFarlane and J.Davies (skip) started extremely well and led 11-1 after 5 ends played, so a victory was on the cards. However, the opponents had different ideas and inexplicably, J.Davies’ rink didn’t win another end, finally losing their game 11-23. This gave the overall result as a 2-6 defeat, which seriously dented the Markinch title challenge, as they now trail leaders Kirkcaldy West End by 9 points. However, with 3 games to go, two at Markinch, then a maximum of 24 points must be the target and Markinch can still win the Division 1 title.
